Wonderful aroma, beautifully polished and lovely wood, southern and international, cherries and vanilla. Delicious, with a full flavour, a powerful start, perfect soft tannins, fruit and juice, spices, beautiful length. It is polished and creamy. Truly a gastronomic wine with excellent aging potential of at least 10 years. The Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino clearly relies on fruit freshness and varietal purity here. This is to showcase the classic side of this hot and dry vintage. The wine remains elegant and bright with plenty of primary fruit, cherries and dried raspberries. It displays a clean, linear style with rosemary, blue flower and some green olive or wild fennel. A rich and elegant Brunello, both in structure and olfactory expression. The structure is powerful and the taste is moreover pleasantly enveloped by a consistent tannin texture, well balanced by a pleasant acidity. Therefore, truly a classic for the table with special occasions!
Although the DOC Brunello di Montalcino was only established in 1980, quality development was so rapid that Brunello was the first region to acquire the new quality designation ‘DOCG’ a few years ago – Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita, the highest recognition for a wine region in Italy. For this wine, Banfi has opted for microvinification, where the grapes from the different vineyards are vinified separately. After aging for 30 months in large vats (casks), the blend is assembled. It then ages for a further 6 months in the bottle. The legal minimum for a Brunello is 24 months. This Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino is made from grapes from Banfi’s historic vineyards and is therefore a magnificent example of a great Brunello: a powerful and classic wine of the region, broad and complex, with particularly good tannins.
Castello Banfi was founded in 1978 thanks to the will of the Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani. From the beginning, the two brothers' goal was to create a state-of-the-art winery combined with the most advanced science in the vineyards for the production of premium wines. Together with the Mariani family, Ezio Rivella, one of Italy's leading oenologists, understood that due to the richness of the soil and the privileged microclimatic position, the property would have great potential for development. During those years, the brothers John and Harry also purchased Bruzzone, a historic winery in Piedmont. This winery, founded in 1860, is known today as Banfi Piemonte.
