99 points Luca Maroni
4,3/5 Vivino
A magnificent wine, we must indeed say! Dark, clear ruby colour. Intense and persistent aromas, with fruity notes of blackberries and cherries, enriched with notes of aromatic spices, cinnamon, cocoa, liquorice, and an intriguing mineral touch. Excellent firm structure, well-balanced. Adequate freshness, the tannins are soft, and the finish is, finally, very long. Ready to drink immediately, but it is nonetheless certainly possible to age it for 10 years in your cellar. Becomes beautifully complex. Excellent with a Moroccan lentil dish or with a venison steak!
The Fantini Edizione Cinque Autoctoni project was born in 1996, when Farnese Vini had just been founded. Since then, 14 years have passed, and the Edizione Cinque Autoctoni has achieved great success and generated significant interest worldwide by collecting prizes and awards: more than 30 gold medals, numerous trophies, and the title “Best Red Wine of Italy” multiple times. Today, consumers also give the Fantini Edizione Cinque Autoctoni a score of 4.3 on Vivino. Quite impressive!
The idea for the wine originated during a remarkable meeting between experts in the sector: Valentino Sciotti, now director of the “Farnese Group”, Filippo Baccalaro, head winemaker of the same group and a third-generation Piedmontese winemaker, Hugh Johnson, the world’s most famous wine journalist, and Jean Marc Sauboua, a third-generation Bordeaux winemaker. During that specific meeting 18 years ago, Hugh Johnson launched a challenge for the two young winemakers: To create a great wine that would bear the character of “Southern Italy”, forged with the best vines of that region; a wine with the humble name “table wine”, but with the soul of “a great wine”, one of those wines that also stands out for its ability to be unique and extraordinarily superior to what the market offers.
Actually a “super Southern Italian” who has everything going for him. After four years of painstaking work and experimental harvests, a total of 5 vines were identified, two from Abruzzo – Montepulciano and Sangiovese – and three from Puglia – Primitivo, Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera. The first vintage of Edizione Cinque Autoctoni is born, the much sought after wine. London chosen as the location for the first official tasting, where Hugh Johnson waited with his curious assessment. Finally, the first tasting was followed by these words from him: “This wine contains everything!” The warmth, the aromas, the flavors of southern Italy... millennia of wine tradition. A dream came true! And now for sale with us.
