Vineyard and winemaking

Fontodi is situated in the heart of a valley south of the town of Panzano, known as the “Conca d’Oro” (Golden Cone) due to the shape of the amphitheater. This is where true and characteristic “Terroir wines” originate. This valley has been famous for centuries for its tradition of quality winemaking, with Sangiovese as the main grape. The terroir consists of a unique combination of high altitude, calcareous and clayey soil, abundant light, and a fantastic microclimate – warm and dry with a distinct difference between day and night temperatures.

Fontodi is a certified organic estate spanning 130 hectares, of which approximately 70 hectares are planted with vines. The farming is inspired by the principles of respect for nature and sustainability. Not only do they avoid the use of chemical products, but they also strive to make as much use as possible of the estate's own resources. For example, the manure from their own Chianina cows. Respect for the environment means wines that are better, purer, and a truer expression of the grape and the region.

The process of vinification and aging in wood takes place in the modern cellar. For two weeks, the wine ferments in stainless steel tanks with natural yeasts. The wine flows by gravity to the cellar below, where it ages in oak barrels for 18 months.

The aroma of Fontodi Chianti Classico DOCG is reminiscent of cherries and plums with undertones of tobacco and leather.
