Flaccianello 2017: a masterpiece from the Fontodi winery

The Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve is one of the best red wines of Italy. The 2017 vintage receives high ratings. Wine critics Robert Parker and Antonio Galloni both give this wine the exceptionally high score of, respectively 96 and 97 points. Consequently, only a few bottles of this top wine from the Fontodi winery are produced per vintage. Fortunately, we have been able to secure some for the true connoisseur. This Super Tuscan can easily age for decades. It is an Italian wine of the class of Lafite Rothschild.

    • 100% Sangiovese; selection of the best plots
    • certified organic
    • Flagship of the Fontodi family estate in Panzano, owned and run by the Manetti family since 1968
    • 18 months raised in French oak barriques and 6 months. on oak foeders
    • Ultimate cellar wine: ready to drink from 2025 to 2042

In conclusion: if you are a true Italian wine aficionado, then it is for that reason that this wine must be in your cellar.

Antonio Galloni (Vinous Media) over Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve

The Flaccianello della Pieve 2017 is fantastic. Dark, sensual, and enveloping, the 2017 captures the essence of the house style in its richness of texture and baritone nuances. Black cherries, plums, spices, new leather, liquorice, and chocolate imbue the 2017 with immense richness. The 2017 spent 18 months in barrique followed by 6 months in the barrel, the same aging regime as the Vigna del Sorbo, but with a little more new oak. That approach worked very well, as the Flaccianello stands out for its exceptional texture, elegance, and finesse. It is an absolutely magnificent wine. Drink by: 2025-2042

Monica Larner (Robert Parker Wine Advocate) over Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve

The Fontodi 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve is a striking wine from the dry vintage. This pure Sangiovese opens to a dark garnet color with more visible concentration and density compared to recent previous editions. This is a beautiful wine with supple tannins, rich dark fruit, balanced acidity, and a fruity alcohol content of 15%. The wine is big and powerful when weighed on the Flaccianello scale (and even more so when weighed on the Sangiovese scale) with dark cherries, plums, spices, violet, chalk, and campfire ash. Despite that power and inner richness, this wine adds that zesty Sangiovese character with fresh acidity and an energetic approach. This Flaccianello is whole and complete with the natural firmness and structure to keep it stable during the aging process. A small proportion of amphora-aged fruit is added to the blend. Rating: 96

    Drinking window: 2021-2045.

    About the Fontodi winery

The Fontodi winery is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Just south of the town of Panzano, it lies in a valley known as the Conca d’Oro: the Golden Shell. The valley owes this name to its amphitheater-like shape, where the sun casts a golden glow over the valley. The unspoiled, authentic, and characteristic terroir within this valley has been famous for centuries for its high-quality viticulture. The unique combination of a high-altitude location, a chalky clay-schist soil, a large number of daylight hours during the growing season, and a fantastic microclimate (warm and dry, with a large temperature difference between day and night) forms the basis of the quality of Fontodi’s superior wines. The Manetti family has owned the winery since 1968.

    Certified organic

The winery is certified organic (as well as undergoing a conversion to fully biodynamic viticulture) and covers 130 hectares. Of this, 70 hectares are planted with vines. There are also a number of hectares of olive groves present. All work at the winery is carried out sustainably with respect for nature. Not only are chemical products completely avoided, but efforts are even made to maximize the use of the resources available on the estate (for example, manure from their own cows). The modern wine cellar consists of multiple levels, allowing for natural use of gravity and preventing damage to the grapes and must during transport. In addition to French oak barrels of various capacities, the Manetti family also uses terracotta amphorae for some wines. Their amphorae are highly sought after and enjoy high demand in the region and even beyond.

The winery is also involved in agritourism. At their Tenute di Pecille (the Pecille estates, consisting of three villas), tourists can therefore also enjoy the majestic surroundings of the Chianti region.
