Brunello di Montalcino is a special Italian wine that many a wine lover dreams of tasting at some point. This Brunello from Il Poggione marks the beginning of the history of its now world-famous reputation. Situated in one of the most beautiful terroirs in the world, on the hills surrounding Montalcino in Tuscany, the Il Poggione winery found its origins in 1890. In that year, Lavinio Franceschi decided to establish a winery in Montalcino. There, he began producing wines from the local Sangiovese clone Brunello, thereby becoming one of the first winemakers to launch the world-famous Brunello di Montalcino onto the market. Wine critics Robert Parker, James Suckling, and Wine Spectator all rate this wine with 94 points!
The grapes for this exceptional wine come from the winery's oldest vineyards in Montalcino. The average age of the vines is between 25 and 40 years. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 150 to 450 meters above sea level. These differences in altitude ensure sufficient coolness, which is beneficial for the acidity of the grapes.
The harvest is carried out entirely by hand. After the harvest, the grapes undergo a skin maceration of 15–20 days to extract color, flavor, and tannins. Following this, the grapes ferment at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks. Subsequently, the wine ages for 30–26 months in large French oak vats. Afterward, the wine ages for a further 12 months in the bottle before being released onto the market.
In the glass, the wine is a beautiful ruby red. Aromas of cherries, plums, cedarwood, and leather fill the nose. The wine can be very closed at first, with firm acidity. As the wine comes into more contact with oxygen, the acidity softens, and the wine becomes smoother and beautifully balanced. Decanting helps reach this point more quickly. The taste is powerful and complex, with a high concentration of dark fruit. Spicy notes and chocolate create a full and round mouthfeel. Velvety tannins and a long finish complete the wine.
Ready to drink now, but can certainly age for years to come!
Serve the wine at around 18 degrees Celsius. A delicious pairing with grilled steak or game dishes. This wine also goes well with aged cheeses.
