Le Patapouf Rouge Malbec from Atelier Dubongout in the Languedoc (IGP Pays d’Oc, France) is a smooth red wine made from the Malbec grape. The wine opens with ripe black fruit, soft tannins, and a light touch of oak. On the glass, you primarily taste blackberries, plums, and black cherry. The structure remains round and accessible. This makes this Malbec suitable for both an aperitif and a meal.
In French, the name Le Patapouf refers to a friendly, somewhat plump figure. That image fits the character of this wine well. The style is generous and inviting. Not austere or heavy, but rather supple and fruit-driven. The wine combines ripe aromas with a fresh undertone, keeping it lively and easy to drink. The finish reveals soft spices, a hint of vanilla, and a light creaminess from the oak aging.
Dark fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, and ripe plum dominate the aroma. These are followed by subtle accents of spices, cocoa, and lightly toasted oak. On the palate, the soft texture stands out. The tannins are ripe and juicy, keeping the wine supple. At the same time, a fresh acidity provides structure and balance. This combination makes the wine versatile at the table.
Le Patapouf Rouge Malbec pairs well with savory dishes with grilled or herb notes. Think, for example, of:
This Malbec also comes into its own with a charcuterie board or hard cheeses. Serve the wine around 16–18°C to emphasize the fruit and freshness.
The grapes for this wine are harvested at night. The cooler temperatures help preserve the aromatic freshness of the Malbec grape. After harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed and vinified with controlled fermentation. Subsequently, the wine ages for approximately a year in a combination of new and used oak barrels. This aging imparts structure and subtle wood notes without overpowering the fruit. This is followed by blending and a short period of bottle aging.
The wine comes from Languedoc-Roussillon, the largest wine region in France. The region stretches along the Mediterranean Sea from Nîmes to Banyuls. The Mediterranean climate, with many hours of sunshine, dry summers, and cooling sea breezes, ensures well-ripened grapes.
Over the past few decades, the Languedoc has evolved from mass production to quality-oriented viticulture. Modern producers here combine traditional grape varieties with precise vinification and lower yields. As a result, wines are created with greater terroir expression and a distinct fruit character. Le Patapouf Rouge Malbec clearly demonstrates this development: an accessible, fruit-rich Languedoc wine with a soft structure and a modern style.
