You have probably never heard of the Schioppettino grape. We understand that perfectly! This local grape comes from the Friuli wine region in northeastern Italy. A completely unknown gem. The grape produces beautifully concentrated wines, full of fruit and with a smooth finish. When we visited this winery for their delicious white wines, we also got to taste this wine. We were immediately enthusiastic from the very first sip. We truly had something fantastic in our glass. We couldn't pass this up and purchased this wine from the producer Monviert as well.
The Monviert Martagona Schioppettino has a deep ruby red color. The aroma is subtle with juicy plums and redcurrant. You also immediately sense something of the beautiful complexity of this wine. A little smoky or tobacco, exciting! The taste isSmooth with concentrated fruit. Round, fresh, accessible, and soft tannins. With this wine, you put something beautiful on the table! Intense in flavor, lots of fruit, and a lovely complexity. Delicious with a piece of grilled meat or, for example, with fried black sausage.
This is what De Grote Hamersma says about Monviert Martagona Schioppettino: All friends gather! Food and drink. Off we go, here she is salame in aceto, after frying, deglaze with red wine vinegar just before serving. Serve with a slice of polenta, per inzuppare, to dip in the gravy. What shall we drink with it? Well, this Schioppettino, of course. Lightly chilled. Bitter cherries, plums in syrup, sweet bay leaf, berry acidity countered by the vinegar. There’s a knock on the door. New friends. Throw another log on the fire. It’s going to be late.
In the most famous French wine guide, Gilbert & Gaillard, it received a gold medal. In Italy, too, they appreciate this wine, awarding it an ‘Oscar’ for price-quality ratio on the Berebene (bere bene = good drinking) by Gambero Rosso. Gambero Rosso is practically Italy’s wine guide, providing recommendations for restaurants and the better wines. We are fans of the Montviert winery (formerly Ronchi San Giuseppe) in Friuli (the region north of Venice). They produce fantastic wines there that often score highly internationally. They are (still) unknown in the Netherlands. It is one of the wineries we import ourselves.
