Comfort zone, feeling good… This tawny lets you enjoy

The Niepoort Tawny Port is a balanced, aged port with plenty of dried fruit in a long and expressive finish. The wine has a delicate, nutty aroma with dried fruit and caramel. Niepoort Tawny Port is a port that can easily be stored for several years, although the quality does not improve much further as it ages. It is a wine that contains no sediment, which means that it does not need to be decanted. The wine has a delicate, nutty aroma with dried fruit and caramel. Young and fruity in character, with sweet, soft tannins and a long finish. The Niepoort Tawny is produced from grapes from low-yielding vineyards in the Douro Valley. These are young wines resulting from various vintages that age for approximately three and a half years in old oak barrels.

What exactly is the “Tawny” in port?

There are two basic types of port, Ruby and Tawny; they have much in common. Both are fortified and sweet, both come from the Douro River valley in Portugal, and both are made by the same producers from the same group of approved grape varieties. After all, they differ completely in style, quality, and price, from everyday to extraordinary.

Both Ruby and Tawny Port wines undergo a maturation period, ranging from moderate to extreme, depending on the type. While Tawny is all caramel and nuts, Ruby has more berry aromas.
However, in addition to the length of time the wine ages, the way it ages also plays a crucial role. Ruby spends less time in wood before bottling, usually in large wooden barrels and perhaps even stainless steel. This helps preserve the vinosity, the intensity of the color, the freshness of the aroma, and the fullness of its structure. Tawny, on the other hand, spends more time aging in wood before bottling, particularly in smaller barrels, which allows for slow oxidation and significantly influences the appearance, aroma, and taste.

    Niepoort

Niepoort has been a family brand for more than half a century. Five generations have followed since Franciscus Marius Niepoort came to Portugal in 1842 to found the Niepoort company. Without land or vineyards, he began his career as a port wine merchant. In the second generation, under the leadership of Eduard Karel, Niepoort established itself as a flourishing business. The third generation was led by Eduard Marius Niepoort, considered an exceptionally skilled natural scientist. In the fourth generation, Niepoort overcame a period of financial difficulties. Eduard Rudolf van der Niepoort led the company at the time and focused on external and internal trade relations with Niepoort. His experience successfully overcame the company's difficulties.

The fifth generation is now led by Dirk Niepoort. Dirk Niepoort has led the company since 2005 and has taken over his own vineyards, Quinta do Carril and Quinta de Nápoles, where some of the best Port wines are produced. Verena Niepoort has also been an Executive Director since 2005. Dedicated to Port production for over 150 years, the Niepoort cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia are extraordinary places where the wines mature according to traditions preserved from generation to generation.
