Pago de Cirsus is located in the southernmost part of the Navarra region, next to the better-known Rioja region. The wines are produced on a single estate, from harvest to fermentation. The entire process is completed on the estate grounds, making it a ‘Vino de Pago’. An exceptional red wine from Spain with classification. Vino de Pago, that is the highest classification in Spain awarded to individual wine producers or individual vineyards. Think of it as the ‘grand cru’, ‘single estate wine’, or ‘Einzellage’ of Spain, also known as ‘vinos de parcela’ (‘plots’ in English). It is essentially a defined piece of land (vineyard) with distinctive characteristics in terms of location, soil, and climate. All that information is wonderful, but let’s talk about the wine now! The Pago de Cirsus Oak Aged Navarra has almost equal parts Tempranillo, Merlot and Syrah – Destemmed and cold macerated before fermentation. Aged in 90% French and 10% American oak for 9 months.
The Pago de Cirsus Oak Aged Navarra has a purple color with a red tint towards the rim. Rich and intense fleshy aromas of cherries and dark ripe plums on the nose, followed by hints of sultana raisins and spices. The astringency creates a pleasantly dry sensation on the palate. Medium-bodied wine with lively acidity. Clean finish with lingering flavors of stewed berries and bay leaves. The Pago de Cirsus Oak Aged Navarra is therefore a powerful glass for when the weather gets a bit colder. A fine glass to put on the table at Christmas with turkey or alongside gourmet dishes.
The word pago comes from the Latin “Pagus”, which refers to a small village or estate. Over time, “Pago” has also been attributed to a specific piece of land possessing certain characteristics. Today, “Vino de Pago” has become the most prized designation for quality Spanish wines.
The Pago de Cirsus winery cultivates all its grapes and bottles all its wines on the estate, where the Ebro River, the Cierzo, and the Moncayo mountains offer exceptional value. The land, the microclimate, the varieties, the production method, and aging come together to produce a special character and personality that is expressed in every bottle.
In 2014, Pago de Cirsus received the Denominación de Origen Protegida Pago (D.O.P. Pago) designation. Furthermore, since that date, the wines have been produced under the D.O.P. Pago Bolandin.
