    Philibert du Charme Carignan Vieilles Vignes: imagine yourself in the South of France

    The Philibert du Charme Carignan Vieilles Vignes is a characterful red wine from the Pays d’Oc. The wine is made from the typical Southern French Carignan grape. It is produced from grapes from old vines, which yield low returns, concentrated fruit, and extra depth.

    The scent highlights ripe strawberries, blackcurrants and blackberries. Underneath are notes of black pepper, licorice and Mediterranean herbs. The taste is juicy and elegant, with fresh acidity, velvety tannins and a spicy aftertaste.

    Old Carignan from two terroirs

    The grapes come from two different regions in the South of France. The clay and limestone soils of the Minervois give the wine ripe fruit, structure, and tannins. The higher-lying and cooler vineyards of the Corbières, on the other hand, provide freshness and tension.

    Combining these two terroirs results in a balanced Carignan. The wine possesses the power and ripeness of the Mediterranean climate, yet remains lively and refined.

    Flavor of Philibert du Charme Carignan

    The wine has a deep ruby red color with purple reflections. On the nose, you find red and dark fruit, such as strawberry, cherry, and blackcurrant. Licorice, black pepper, and light spices give the wine extra complexity.

    On the palate, it is full and smooth. The ripe fruit is supported by fine acidity and soft tannins. Subtle toasted notes and a light spiciness linger in the finish.

    • Style: full, fruity, spicy and smooth
    • Grape: 100% Carignan
    • Origin: Pays d'Oc, Southern France
    • Aroma’s: strawberry, blackcurrant, blackberry, pepper and liquorice
    • Serving temperature: approximately 16 to 18 °C

    Manual harvest and subtle wood aging

    The Carignan is harvested by hand. To preserve the fruity character, approximately 25% of the grapes are fermented as whole bunches. This gives the wine extra freshness, juiciness, and aromatic expression.

    The remaining grapes are vinified traditionally. A maceration of approximately two weeks provides color, flavor, and round tannins. Subsequently, 10% of the wine ages in wooden barrels. The majority remains in stainless steel tanks, ensuring that the fruit and elegance take center stage.

    Which dishes pair with this Carignan?

    With its combination of ripe fruit, soft tannins, and spiciness, this wine pairs well with hearty and Mediterranean dishes. Serve it, for example, with:

    • slow-cooked beef;
    • Lamb stew with thyme and rosemary;
    • cassoulet or other bean dishes;
    • grilled sausages and vegetables;
    • ratatouille or baked aubergine;
    • mature hard and semi-hard cheeses.

    This wine also comes into its own perfectly at an informal get-together with charcuterie, olives, and hard cheese.

    What does Vieilles Vignes mean?

    Old Vines means old vines. Older vines usually produce fewer grapes, but the grapes often have more concentration and character. Moreover, their deep roots draw water and nutrients from various soil layers.

    You can taste that in this wine. Philibert du Charme Carignan Vieilles Vignes combines juicy fruit with depth, spiciness, and a remarkably soft texture.
