    The beast Aglianico tamed

The Vigneti del Vulture Piano del Cerro Aglianico is an Italian powerhouse. Intense, full yet quite smooth in taste. A party in your glass! Flavors of black (black currant and cherry) and red fruit (raspberry and cherry), tobacco, dark chocolate, vanilla, forest and mushrooms, herbs (pepper and cloves) and a little charcoal. A great wine made from the Aglianico grape with a beautiful complexity and a super long aftertaste. The beautiful heavy bottle already raises the expectation that we are dealing with a serious wine here. This wine is a winner for lovers of powerful red. The wine is aged in wood for 15 months. This is great, especially for that price! A wine that makes us happy! One of our personal favorites! This wine is delicious in combination with, for example, leg of lamb or Moroccan dishes. We personally think that a spicy Satay Kambing also tastes great.

The Piano del Cerro Aglianico is a truly special wine. This full wine has a lot of depth and is complex. This is because it is made from the Aglianico grape from the Basilicata region. This Aglianico grape is also called the Barolo of the South. The producer, Vigneti del Vulture, has created something very beautiful and it was also noticed by one of the most famous wine critics, Robert Parker. He gave this wine no less than 90 points.

    Aglianico grape

Aglianico (nero) is a blue grape variety that reigns supreme in Basilicata and Campania. This variety, which ripens rather late, which is also found in Campania, has its own unique taste profile: deeply colored, dark fruity, ripe wines, often immensely concentrated and with a good dose of tannin, which makes it resistant to many years of bottle aging. Here the vinification has resulted in the tannins being well tamed and the glass drinking smoothly.

This grape is able to perfectly reflect the minerality of the volcanic soil on which it usually grows in the final wine. That is also the secret of good Aglianico grapes: pleasantly ripe due to sufficiently high temperatures and enough sunlight, while retaining fresh acidity and a crisp character due to the nightly cooling.

For centuries it was thought that this grape, which is also commonly found in Basilicata, was of Greek origin, but DNA and linguistic research has shown that the Aglianico grape is an autochthonous Italian variety that shows clear traits of other grape varieties in Campania.
