Why is Californian Chardonnay so popular?

California is currently one of the world's most renowned wine regions and is primarily known for its excellent Chardonnays. The climate and terroir are often compared to the French Burgundy, which produces the top Chardonnay wines! The wine regions in California known for their Chardonnay production include the North Coast (Napa Valley and Sonoma County), Central Coast (San Francisco Bay and Monterey County), South Coast, Central Valley (Sacramento Delta), and Sierra Foothills. These regions have different climatic conditions and soil types, resulting in subtle variations in flavor profiles. In general, Californian Chardonnays have a rich and full character, often featuring pronounced fruity aromas such as apple, citrus, peach, and tropical fruit. The wines in the Californian Chardonnay tasting pack have all undergone oak aging, resulting in the development of aromas of vanilla, butter, and caramel.

Bernardus Chardonnay Monterey County

Bernardus Winery is a very well-known winery in Monterey County on the Central Coast of California. The vineyards are situated on the slopes in Carmel Valley. The terroir consists of well-draining, gravelly terraces with a moderately low temperature thanks to the cool winds and mist coming from the ocean. This allows the grapes to ripen slowly and gives the wine a beautiful acidity. The long oak aging creates a delicious aroma of exotic fruit, white flowers, and, of course, vanilla. Full, round, and smooth on the palate with a long and powerful finish!

Panamera Chardonnay

The Chardonnay from Panamera is one of our best-selling Chardonnays. Although the wine is made at Rutherford Range in Napa Valley, the Panamera vineyards are located in the Central Coast and Central Valley. The grapes are hand-picked and fermented in stainless steel tanks, which gives it a mineral character and preserves the fresh fruit. The wine then ages for several months in oak barrels, giving it a beautiful round, creamy taste with aromas of vanilla and cinnamon. A long, rich, and above all fruity finish.

Francis Ford Coppola Director’s Cut Chardonnay

“From the makers of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now”. World-renowned director Francis Ford Coppola makes not only brilliant films but also brilliant wine! This Director’s Cut is his version of the characteristic Chardonnay from Sonoma County. The vineyards for this wine are situated on the most beautiful fields of the Russian River Valley, just above Sonoma County. The wine has undergone 9 months of wood aging in French barriques, imparting beautiful and powerful notes of vanilla and toast. Fruity aromas of ripe apple and pear with a touch of citrus acidity bring the wine into beautiful balance. An American wine with a Burgundian character!

Riverstone Monterey Chardonnay J. Lohr Winery

Jerry Lohr is a typical example of a Californian winemaker: an eye for market needs combined with the ambition to be the best. This top Chardonnay is the result of years of experimentation and refinement for the perfect result. The house style today can be described as more Burgundian than Californian! The vineyards are located in Arroyo Seco and Monterey County and have a soil of sandy loam and clay. The wine ferments in barriques and subsequently ages for 7 to 9 months in new and used barriques of French, Hungarian, and American oak. A rich, full-bodied, yet fresh wine with ripe citrus, apple, nectarine, honey, vanilla, and toast. A deliciously creamy texture and a long finish.

Wente Morning Fog Chardonnay

The Wente Morning Fog takes its name from the morning mist that forms in San Francisco Bay. This morning mist is blown over the vineyards in San Francisco Bay in Central Coast, providing the grapes with sufficient cooling to ripen calmly and evenly. After the manual harvest, the wine undergoes partial mentholing in stainless steel and American oak. Subsequently, the wine ages largely on the lees for 5 months in both stainless steel and oak, while a small portion is already separated from the yeast cells to preserve the fruity character. The Chardonnay bursts out of the glass with aromas of citrus and green apple, complemented by hints of toasted oak and vanilla. Beautifully balanced with fine minerality and acidity, this makes it yet another stunning Chardonnay from the Wente estate.

Bogle Vineyards Chardonnay

The Bogle Vineyards Chardonnay is the embodiment of a handcrafted wine: with passion for both the coast and the science of winemaking. The winemakers at Bogle Vineyards have created a sustainable Chardonnay certified under the California Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing! The vineyards are located in the Delta region, which is part of the Central Valley. The Chardonnay ages 50% in new oak barrels. A glass full of aromas of green apple and candied pear with honey, vanilla, and a hint of nutmeg. A rich, round opening with a silky mouthfeel and a long, smooth finish.
