Le Difese: a 'table wine' of truly excellent origin

The winemakers Tenuta San Guido of the famous Sassicaia wine, the progenitor of the Super Tuscans, has put a delicious wine on the market with the Tenuta San Guido Le Difese. And what's more, it is affordable for everyone. This Le Difese – Toscana from the Tenuta San Guido winery is a reasonably robust wine. One that has a fantastic aroma of dark fruit such as berries, blackberries, and black cherries. Pleasant spiciness with some spices from the wood, and beautiful bitter chocolate notes. The taste is also full of juiciness, with beautifully concentrated black fruit, refreshing acidity, velvety tannins, and a slightly spicy finish. A real gem of a wine for a very good price. Quality speaks for itself.

The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), which is important for San Guido, and the, typical of Tuscany. Sangiovese (30%). The blend with this local grape makes the wine just a little friendlier and more accessible. As a result, it is already wonderful to enjoy at a young age.

The vineyards from which the grapes for Le Difese originate have a limestone subsoil rich in clay and pebbles. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of between 100 and 300 meters. After the harvest, the grapes ferment in stainless steel tanks. The resulting wine is aged for twelve months in French and partly American oak barrels.

    The Story of Sassicaia

Tenuta San Guido was founded by Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. Considered the groundbreaking “Super Tuscan”, the name Sassicaia originated in 1948 when it was first produced by Incisa della Rocchetta using Cabernet Sauvignon vines. For years, it was used exclusively for family consumption. Although Sassicaia remained the Marquis’s personal wine for years, his son Nicolò and nephew Piero Antinori persuaded him to bring it to market, starting with the 1968 vintage, which was unveiled in 1971. Initially, only a few thousand bottles were available, but this created demand for more. Mario Incisa della Rocchetta hired consulting eonologist Giacomo Tachis to further refine the wine while simultaneously increasing production.

In 1994, Sassicaia was granted its own DOC (Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC), the only wine from a single estate in Italy to enjoy this privilege. Initially, it was an IGT wine, and before that, even a Vino da tavola. A table wine with a rich history.
