The Lagrein grape is a unique indigenous blue grape from Alto Adige/Südtirol in Northern Italy. Planted on the mountain slopes south of Bolzano. The wines from this grape are deep purple-red in color in their youth. They smell of dark fruit and have a remarkably accessible taste. The regular Lagrein from Cantina Tramin is already delicious. However, their top wine from this grape, the Tramin Lagrein Riserva Urban, is truly impressive. Made from very old vines, some 100 years old.
Rarely do you smell and taste fruit of such intensity and purity. It is as if you are sticking your nose into a basket of freshly picked, crisp forest fruit, with ripe yet fresh blueberries, blackberries, and blackcurrants. There are also a few violets and a piece of bitter chocolate in that basket. In the distance, there is a tiny hint of vanilla from the 12 months of aging in French oak. On the palate, the wine is cool and fresh, with beautiful fruit, fine tannins, and acidity. An enormously long finish. A beautiful wine that can handle a little cellar aging but is already so incredibly delicious.
So nice to drink with a piece of game as Roe deer or Duck. A beautiful, intense sauce based on a game jus with a spoonful of blueberry jam mixed in finishes it off perfectly. If you don't want to spend a long time in the kitchen, we recommend a plate of local charcuterie topped with, of course, some Bresaola and Prosciutto. You will truly surprise your circle of friends with this Tramin Lagrein Riserva Urban. Serving temperature 16-18°C. It can easily keep in the cellar for another 5-7 years.
Cantina Tramin, the home of Gewürztraminer, was founded in 1898 by Christian Schrott, the pastor of Tramin and a member of the Austrian Parliament, as a small project involving just a few families, to guarantee the livelihood and future of the mountain winegrowers. Thanks to the strength of this union, Cantina Tramin has grown over time into one of the most successful cooperatives in the region and a globally recognized example. Today, they are comprised of 160 families cultivating a total of approximately 260 hectares, with the pride of those who know that every bottle contains their philosophy of life and work: precision, dedication, trust, and creativity.
In 1971, Cantina Tramin merged with the historic Cantina Sociale of Egna, founded in 1893. A union that combines the heritage of traditions and vineyards into a single cooperative reality, including the prestigious lands in Mazzon and Glen dedicated to Pinot Noir.
With the arrival of our oenologist Willi Stürz at the winery in the 1990s, the reversal of the trend towards quality was consolidated and the Selezione wines project was launched, which today includes Nussbaumer, Terminum, Unterebner, Stoan, Freisinger, Maglen, Urban, and Leem: the highest expression of their oenological knowledge and the result of a selection of our most prized vineyards. From now on, the entire production will be focused on excellence. In 2010, the renovation of our headquarters was completed, a project designed by architect Werner Tscholl, a structural sculpture that became an icon and symbol of Termeno.
In 2018, Cantina Tramin launched Epokale, a wine that pushes the boundaries of Gewürztraminer and the first Italian white wine to receive 100 Parker points. The Tramin Lagrein Riserva Urban certainly scores very high as well. At least with us. Delicious!
