The Villa Sandi Asolo Prosecco Superiore is a sparkling wine to add a golden touch to every day. A Prosecco with a DOCG appellation, therefore guaranteed to be made under the strictest standards and 100% of the Glera made from grapes. The driest version, Brut (“Dry” Prosecco is therefore less dry), which is the most refreshing and shakes up your taste buds. It is straw-yellow in color with a fine mousse. No aggressive bubbles here like with the often cheap supermarket rubbish Prosecco on sale. The taste is elegant and refined with notes of exotic fruit, apple, and pear. Deliciously crisp finish.
Truly a prosecco for the garden or a picnic. It can also be taken along on the boat, but do drink it from a flute. Plastic glasses are beneath its dignity; don't subject it to that! Of course, the Villa Sandi Asolo Prosecco Superiore is also delicious with the anti-pasti als je je voor je gasten in de keuken hebt uitgesloofd!
Villa Sandi is a large family business that owns multiple estates in Veneto and Friuli. They specialize in Prosecco, for which they enjoy much international recognition. Villa Sandi Asolo Prosecco Superiore has been tested as the best Prosecco in Germany several times.
The beautiful Villa Sandi, dating back to 1622, is owned by the Moretti Polegato family. Giancarlo (one of the brothers; the other is the founder of Geox shoes) is the managing director and owner. Villa Sandi is a modern, efficiently run company. After the harvest, the must for the Prosecco wines is filtered and stored at a very cool temperature to maintain quality. The Proseccos only undergo their first and second fermentation shortly after the bottles are to be sold. This allows you to enjoy their super-fresh Proseccos all year round.
With the creation of the new designation (DOCG means designation of controlled and guaranteed origin, while DOC simply stands for designation of controlled origin, without guarantee), the production area for top Prosecco was limited to the provinces of Valdobbiadene (the most famous), Conegliano (the historical center for Prosecco production, dating back to the 18th century), and Asolo (the least known of the best townships for Prosecco production, where Bele Casel grows his wines).
To add the “guarantee” to the labeling, the grapes used to make the wine must have been grown in one of those villages.
The DOC, on the other hand, has been expanded to include a broader part of the Veneto region and also encompasses Friuli-Venezia Giulia (simply known as Friuli), where Prosecco has existed for quite some time.
What it comes down to is the following: Prosecco grown in Asolo, Valdobbiadene, and Conegliano is hilltop Prosecco, whereas the Prosecco grown in the larger Veneto and Friuli is valley Prosecco. Hilltop Prosecco must be harvested by hand, because the hillsides in that township are famously steep. Valley Prosecco is generally harvested mechanically.
There is much more leeway regarding quality control and agricultural regimes in the valley. In the hills, on the other hand, the quality is much higher due to stricter agricultural practices.
There is almost always a price difference. But as every well-informed wine lover knows, you get what you pay for.
