Zenato Valpolicella Superiore is a deliciously fleshy, juicy wine. Not super powerful, but rather pure and somewhat lighter in style than its heavier brother, the Ripasso, for example. Beautiful balance of acidity and other flavor components. Lots of black cherry and blueberry, and a hint of bitter chocolate and spices. Soft tannins, ripe, silky finish. Truly Italian. Truly Valpolicella. The oak aging also adds an aroma of vanilla and spices. In the finish, this Valpolicella Superiore has virtually no tannins! A smooth red wine for easy drinking.
The Valpolicella from Zenato is made of 80% Corvina Veronese, 10% Rondinella, and 10% Sangiovese grapes. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, this wine ages for 12 months in oak barrels. Perfect for a pizza party, but it also enjoys a chicken or a farmed duck from the oven. Chill slightly in the summer to keep it nice and fresh!
The family winery, under the long-standing leadership of Sergio Zenato, has contributed significantly to the popularity of wines from Lake Garda. More than 2,000 years ago, the Romans already appreciated the grapes from this region with its gently rising hills. Determination, passion, and a consistent pursuit of quality have made the company in Peschiera near San Benedetto one of the most important wineries in Veneto. Conscious of their historical roots, Sergio’s descendants Alberto and Nadia today produce high-quality, pure, powerful, and fruity wines of the absolute top class at Azienda Agricola Santa Cristina. Meanwhile, the raw materials are sourced from the best locations in the important Veronese growing regions of Valpolicella and Lugana.
The excellent microclimate and soils south of Lake Garda are perfect for growing grapes, particularly the indigenous Trebbiano di Lugana grape variety. Since the mid-1970s, other vineyards in the municipality of Sant’Ambrogio have belonged to the family estate. As a result, the classic local red varieties Corvina and Rondinella grow and thrive. The yields from the Zenato family vineyards, which are constantly being improved by oenologists from the University of Milan, remain well below the permitted limits to optimize grape quality. While the base material for the important and always reliable selections comes from their own vineyards, the basic wines are usually made from grapes from proven suppliers. Moreover, only the best fruit is ultimately carefully vinified in the cellar using modern technology.
In conclusion, we can say that it sometimes seems as though the Zenatos possess a kind of magic wand. They are able to pinpoint exactly the mood of both the vineyard and the customer. In any case, their red and white wines are characterized by a peaceful sweetness, an impressive freshness, and a balanced finesse, without losing the expression of the vine or the terroir.
All of this shows that Zenato Valpolicella Superiore has not undeservedly won a number of convincing awards. Entirely deserved, if you ask us.
