What is Chardonnay?

Chardonnay is one of the most versatile and popular white grape varieties in the world. This grape is known for its adaptability to different climates and soil types, resulting in a wide range of wine styles. The grape originally comes from France. The aromas of Chardonnay vary depending on where it is grown and how the wine is made. So, what exactly is Chardonnay? Well, in cooler climates, such as in Chablis, France, Chardonnay shows fresh, mineral notes with citrus and green apple. In warmer regions, such as California or Australia, riper aromas come forward, such as tropical fruit, peach and pineapple.

Bourgogne Chardonnay

The Burgundy region in France is considered the birthplace of the Chardonnay grape and plays a crucial role in the world of wine. Here, the unique limestone-rich soils and temperate climate are ideal for producing high-quality Chardonnay wines. It is in this region, especially in the subregions of Chablis and Côte de Beaune, that the grape finds its greatest expression, from mineral, fresh wines to richer, oak-aged styles. For centuries, Burgundy producers have set the standard for the quality and diversity of Chardonnay wines worldwide. This heritage makes Burgundy one of the most highly regarded wine regions for lovers of white wine.

What is the flavor profile of Chardonnay?

Chardonnay wines are known for their versatility, with a flavor profile that varies greatly depending on the climate and winemaking techniques. People generally regard Chardonnay as a full-bodied and round white. In cool climates, such as Chablis, Chardonnay often exhibits a fresh, mineral character with citrus notes, green apple, and sometimes subtle floral nuances. In warmer climates, such as California or the Southern Netherlands, Chardonnay can develop richer flavors of tropical fruit like pineapple and mango, often with a buttery texture due to malolactic fermentation. Oak aging often adds vanilla, caramel, and toasted notes, giving the wine a creamy, full-bodied character. This variation makes Chardonnay one of the most versatile and beloved white wines in the world.

Vinification and terroir

Chardonnay is often aged in oak barrels, which gives the wine extra layers of vanilla. The wine also often undergoes MLF and autolysis (malolactic fermentation and lees contact), creating aromas of butter and toasted bread. This grape is used for both still white wines and sparkling wines, including the famous Champagne from France. Thanks to its wide range of flavours and styles, from fresh and mineral to full-bodied and creamy, Chardonnay appeals to many different wine lovers. The best-known regions for Chardonnay are Burgundy in France, Sonoma in California and the Yarra Valley in Australia. The grape can age well and develops beautiful, complex notes after several years in the bottle.

Wood aging or steel tanks and MLF

Chardonnay wines lend themselves well to wood aging. The oak barrels make the wine more flavorful and softer. This imparts notes of vanilla, caramel, a hint of smoke, and coconut (a specific characteristic of American oak). Malolactic fermentation is also often applied. In this process, the harsh malic acid is converted into the softer lactic acid. This makes the wine creamy and buttery.

In stainless steel tanks, the grape remains fresher. It is often grown in a cooler climate in this case. The fresh characteristics then come closer to those of Sauvignon Blanc.

Is a Chardonnay dry or sweet?

Wines made from the Chardonnay grape are usually dry. However, they may be made with slightly lower acidity and a higher alcohol content. Combined with many tropical fruit aromas, these characteristics can make the wines come across as slightly sweet, due to a full body and fewer fresh notes. Whether a Chardonnay is sweet or dry therefore depends on the production method and the style of the winemaker.

Which foods pair well with Chardonnay?

Chardonnay is a perfect wine to pair with many different dishes. Fresh, unoaked Chardonnays go excellently with light fish dishes, shellfish and goat cheese. Fuller, oak-aged Chardonnays pair well with creamy pasta dishes, roasted chicken and fatty fish such as salmon. Well-known examples of Chardonnay wines include Chablis from France, Meursault and full-bodied Chardonnays from Napa Valley in California. Thanks to its versatility and popularity, Chardonnay remains a favourite among both novice and experienced wine lovers.

Chardonnay bubbles

Chardonnay is the quintessential grape of Champagne and white wines from Burgundy. In Italy, Chardonnay also thrives and has long been cultivated for white sparkling wines. Franciacorta is a well-known example, produced in the same way as Champagne, but with a bit more sun, which makes the flavor fuller and rounder.

What is the difference between Chardonnay and Sauvignon?

Generally speaking, if you are in the mood for a fresher wine, you are better off going for a Sauvignon Blanc. And if you are in the mood for a fuller, softer wine, you are better off going for a Chardonnay. But ultimately, not all Chardonnays are the same, so let yourself be guided by the characteristics listed in a specific wine's description.
