In northeastern Italy, situated between Lake Garda and Venice, lies the Veneto wine region. Viticulture has been practiced here since Roman times. It is a prosperous region with significant industry. The Veneto wine region has approximately 74,000 hectares of vineyards. With a production of millions of hectoliters of wine, Veneto is one of the largest wine producers in Italy.
The quality is generally very good, and fantastic wines come from here. Take, for example, the Valpolicella Ripasso and the Amarone. But Prosecco, Soave, Bardolino, and Lugana also come from here!
Fortunately, much has already changed and turned entirely for the better. On average, the quality is very good. At the moment, the Valpolicella Ripasso and the Amarone (made from dried grapes) are particularly popular. At Wijnclub Amsterdam, for example, you can order the delicious Zenato Ripassa Valpolicella or a fantastic Valpolicella Ripasso Monti Garbi.
Moreover, there is more than just Valpolicella: How about Soave and Bianco di Custoza? Wines that are easy to drink, with plenty of fruit and low alcohol content. Wines that align perfectly with the current wine trend, which calls for more digestible and somewhat lighter styles of wines.
The greatest current success of the Veneto is the wines from the area around Treviso: Prosecco. There are different styles: frizzante and spumante. Frizzante means that the bottle contains a light fizz and is therefore also called semi-sparkling. Spumante has more pressure and consequently a more clearly present bubble that also continues to sparkle in your glass for longer. The popularity of Prosecco is so great that it seems to have already become a generic term for sparkling wines in general.
For those who prioritize quality and wish to serve a truly excellent Prosecco, the best choice is a Prosecco from Valdobbiadene DOCG. These Proseccos are the finest and driest, featuring a fine mousse and a refined mouthfeel. Wijnclub Amsterdam has also selected a Prosecco from the top segment of La Gioiosa, a Prosecco from Valdobbiadene.
Even during Roman times, the wines of Valpolicella already had a good reputation. The wines are often somewhat lighter in color. The aromas and flavors are often dominated by plenty of cherry, fruity, and sometimes a little spicy. The grapes used are Corvina, Molinara, and Rondinella.
Variations on the Valpolicella theme, such as Superiore, Ripassos, and Amarone, further depend on the additional grape varieties in the blend and the choice of wooden barrel type. Aging in French oak barrels imparts aromas of toast and vanilla. This has clearly become somewhat more popular lately.
In addition to the standard wine, there are several traditional Valpolicellas, such as Amarone, with a higher alcohol content, made from grapes dried on straw mats in climate-controlled rooms. These wines feature a great deal of dark fruit, such as the sour cherry. The wine is ideal for aging. Amarones are truly meditative wines.
