Phew, after tasting this, we had to sit down for a moment. Totally blown away. What a phenomenal wine this is! We are familiar with several Brunellos, but this was definitely one that stood head and shoulders above the rest. The Antinori Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino 2015 was tasted (after double decanting, so into the carafe and back into the bottle) alongside other wines from the Chianti Classico appellation made by Marchesi Antinori. It is always surprising to see how the different Sangiovese wines (Brunello is a clone of the Sangiovese grape) from these two geographically close appellations ultimately taste. Truly a different wine!
This edition of Antinori Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino from the warm year 2015 feels quite elegant at first, but in smell and taste it is a very broad interpretation of the Brunello Grape with abundant crisp forest fruit notes of blackberries, herbs, tar, and earthy aromas. The wood is beautifully integrated. There is a touch of warmth or extra ripeness due to the warm year, which makes the wine particularly accessible. The wine has already evolved slightly and is therefore already wonderfully drinkable. At the Pian delle Vigne winery, they have adopted the Brunello aging method in large barrels. This preserves the exceptional characteristics of the Brunello grape. Brunello Pian delle Vigne is an extraordinary expression with great finesse.
The Antinori Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne is a delight for any discerning wine lover. Consequently, he will only serve this wine after several years. This wine handles 15 years of cellar aging with ease. It is a perfect pairing for exquisite dishes such as saddle of hare or a complex Beef Wellington. Pappardelle con la Lepri this is a real classic!
The Pian Delle Vigne estate is located 6 kilometers (3.5 miles) southwest of Montalcino. The name comes from the area of the same name, where a characteristic nineteenth-century train station is situated. The estate comprises 184 hectares, of which 65 hectares are planted with vines, generally facing southwest at an altitude of 130 meters above sea level.
The estate's Brunello, Pian delle Vigne, represents Marchesi Antinori's very personal interpretation of a prestigious and traditional wine like Brunello di Montalcino. The Antinori family acquired the estate in 1995, the same year the first Brunello Pian delle Vigne was produced.
