Wine has been made on the Decugnano dei Barbi estate since A.D. 1212! The ‘Decugnano’ manor house is located in Orvieto, in the Italian UmbriëIn 1212, this estate was in the hands of the church and wine was already being sold there. In 1973, the young winemaker Claudio Barbi passed by the abandoned winery and decided to breathe new life into it. Since then, the finest wine has been produced at Decugnano dei Barbi. This A.D. 1212 is an ode to the rich history of the manor house and the surrounding area.
The A.D. 1212 consists of 65% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon en 15% Montepulciano. The grapes come from various vineyards in Oriveto. The vineyard soil is a combination of marl and loam and is rich in limestone thanks to the many fossilized shells. The grapes ferment in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature for 12 to 15 days. After this fermentation, the juice remains in contact with the skins and seeds for another 7 to 14 days for optimal extraction of color and aromas. Subsequently, one-third of the wine ages for 12 months in French oak barrels. The A.D. 1212 then comes to life through the blending of the wine. Another 6 months of bottle aging, and then the A.D. 1212 enters the market.
In the glass, the A.D. 1212 is ruby red in color. As the years pass, the wine will show fewer purple tones and appear increasingly orange. The aroma is full of red fruit notes of cherries and plums, with a hint of dried flowers. Earthy aromas with leather and clove provide depth and complexity. On the palate, the wine is the epitome of elegance. Silky smooth and round, juicy, fruity with a spicy touch and light vanilla thanks to the oak aging. A delicious wine for BBQ, grilled meat, and grilled vegetables. You will experience the taste to the fullest when serving the wine at a temperature of 16 to 18ºC.
This Decugnano dei Barbi A.D. 1212 has been scoring points with many wine critics for years. The 2019 vintage received 92 points from Vinous, with the remark that this wine only gets better with age. Previous vintages received 92 points from James Suckling and Robert Parker, and won awards from Perswijn, among others.
