Less than two hours' drive from Barcelona lies Priorat, one of Spain's most prestigious wine regions. Together with Rioja, this region holds the highest quality label: DOQ. You can taste this immediately in La Garnatxa Fosca: a rich, juicy red wine from old vines. Moreover, this wine was awarded 92 points by James Suckling.
What makes this wine truly special are the sixty-year-old vines. They root deep in the famous Licorella soil of Priorat. This is a black slate that gives the wine a distinctive minerality. As a result, you taste not only fruit but also a fresh, stony tension in the wine.
The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 300 to 400 meters around El Molar. During the day, the sun ensures optimal ripening, while it cools down at night. As a result, the grapes retain their freshness and balance.
In the glass, you see a deep ruby red color with great intensity. The aroma opens with ripe red and black fruit such as cherry, blackberry, and plum. This is followed by layers of vanilla, dark chocolate, and a hint of pepper and leather.
On the palate, the wine is full and round, yet remarkably smooth. The tannins, which provide structure, are soft. As a result, the wine remains accessible. At the same time, fresh acidity ensures liveliness. Thus, every sip invites the next.
After the harvest, the wine ages for ten months in French oak barrels. This imparts extra complexity and a silky smooth texture. Furthermore, the barrels provide subtle notes of spices and vanilla, without overpowering the fruit.
This Priorat is at its best with hearty dishes. Think of slow-cooked game, grilled lamb with rosemary, or a piece of aged Manchego. It is precisely the combination of ripe fruit, herbs, and minerality that makes it a perfect partner for savory flavors.
Serve the wine at around 18 degrees. If necessary, let it breathe by decanting, as it may be somewhat closed at first.
La Garnatxa Fosca perfectly demonstrates why Priorat belongs to the absolute top. You get power, elegance, and that typical minerality in one glass. Moreover, the price-quality ratio is remarkably good.
