The Menade Rueda Verdejo is an honest and ecological white wine from Rueda produced by Bodegas Menade, a project founded by the Sanz brothers in 2005. This winery is also part of the Sitios de Bodega group. This Menade Verdejo is made from 100% Verdejo grapes from vineyards between 18 and 30 years old. The vineyards are organically farmed; herbal tea or whey is used for treatment instead of more invasive chemicals. An organic fertilizer is also used instead of minerals. They work in a highly organic manner, including the installation of insect hotels, matching which tree belongs to which vineyard, and striving for high biodiversity. The wine is an expression of freshness and the wild side of dev. Verdejo-variety. The grapes for this come from various plots in and around Rueda that grow on gravelly, clayey, and calcareous soils.
But what does it all taste like in the end? Actually, it is very similar to a Sauvignon Blanc. But with just a few more rough edges... lots of citrus like lemon and lime. Nice and crisp and fresh. Lovely green herbs along with some melon aromas too. Fresh acidity. Hamersma gives it an 8.5! Nice as a summer aperitif but excellent with shellfish and goat cheese. Actually, it is very tasty with a pot of mussels, for example! Which one we happen to have!
For the production of Menade Verdejo Rueda, three harvests are carried out: one when the grapes are not yet fully ripe, one during the day by hand, and finally one at night using mechanical techniques. This type of harvesting is based on soil composition and performance management. Once the grapes are picked, a blanket of dry ice (-80°C) is applied immediately before pressing, without the addition of sulfur dioxide. All this is done to avoid oxidation and preserve fresher aromas!
Fermentation takes place purely using the grapes' own natural wild yeasts, ensuring the wine truly reflects its environment. Consequently, it is fresh and lively with pronounced herbal elements and minerality: the personality and – for many – the personification of Bodegas Menade!
But take note: they go even further in their ecological thinking with their Bodegas Menade Nosso!! The Vin Nature session is also available on our site!
