Bishop’s Leap Sauvignon Blanc… a leap that leads to a citrus bomb!

The name Bishop’s Leap is derived from the name of a cliff. This is linked to a myth among the local population of Marlborough. Allegedly, long ago, a Bishop in Marlborough, following a disagreement about winning souls among Anglican Catholics, was chased by a group of Maori warriors until he reached the edge of a steep cliff high above the Wairau River. He took the leap (“Bishop’s Leap”) into the wild-flowing river. Nothing was ever heard of the Bishop again, but the river he landed in was; this is the river that today serves as the water source for the vineyards in Marlborough. This is also why it is possible to produce such beautiful, fresh wines in this region. The abundance of sunshine hours does the rest.

This Bishop’s Leap Sauvignon Blanc settles entirely in line with previous vintages: crystal-clear Granny Smith apple, chock-full of pink grapefruit, kiwi, passion fruit, mango, Granny Smith apple, gooseberry, grape leaf, and fresh mint. Provided it is well chilled at around 9 degrees, we have a super fresh, thirst-quenching citrus explosion on the palate. It crackles out of the glass. Delicious as an aperitif. Also delicious with a summer salad with chicken or goat cheese. Actually, it is also perfectly suited to accompany  Thai-style mussels.

    Marlborough, New-Zealand

With over 75% by volume of the New Zealand wine industry, spread across valleys along the New Zealand coastline, Marlborough is world-famous for producing wines of pure intensity that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The producer, Marlborough Valley Wines, is centrally located in the Wairau Valley in Marlborough, New Zealand. The winery uses grapes from carefully selected vineyards in Marlborough to produce wines with pure fruit in a recognizable Marlborough style. The wines offer excellent value for money every vintage. Marlborough is, of course, most famous for its Sauvignon Blancs.

The very specific style of the region is difficult to replicate due to the unique characteristics of the area. The combination of well-draining soils, many hours of sunshine, and a large temperature difference between day and night gives the wines their characteristic, expressive character with pronounced notes of tropical fruit. Strangely enough, the reduced ozone in the atmosphere at this location contributes an extra factor. This wine was made by the talented Megan Simmonds, who is also part of the production team at the prestigious and well-known Saint Clair.
