Several styles of wine are made from the Barbera grape. Often, these are somewhat simple, easy-drinking wines that can also simply be tasty. Tasty, but nothing more, nothing less. But sometimes… sometimes you come across some very serious stuff, and the Luigi Einaudi Barbera is one of them. Wow, what a substantial glass of wine this is! Someone really put a lot of effort into this. Powerful, rich, viscous, with clear oak aging. A beautiful glass for the table. Very tasty; it leaves you wanting more. The Luigi Einaudi Barbera is a ruby-red wine with plenty of color and aromas of red fruit, cherries, forest fruit, and some smoky cedarwood. The taste is full and concentrated with that same red and dark fruit, licorice, some earthy notes, velvety tannins, and a pleasant complexity. Clearly a wine with character that is certainly suitable for aging for a few years.
Delicious with a nice piece of meat from the charcoal grill, pastas with hearty tomato-based meat sauces, meaty mushrooms, and hard cheeses. And well, our guilty pleasure... also just really tasty with pizzas.
If you Google Luigi Einaudi, you end up at “President of Italy,” and indeed, he was Italy’s first president after World War II. Trained as an economist, he remains closely involved in the expansion and development of his wine company. To this day, the guiding principle when selecting new vineyards is that ‘a great wine can only come from a great vineyard and great terroir.’ The San Luigi cru in Dogliani (where Luigi Einaudi owns a vineyard) and the most recent Cannubi cru in Barolo are good examples of this.
Since 1990, the wine company has been in the hands of Luigi’s talented great-grandson Matteo Sardegna.
The vineyards of San Luigi, San Giacomo and Madonna delle Grazie are located Piedmont around Dogliani at an altitude of 350 meters and are oriented to the south, southwest, and southeast. The soils consist of limestone, clay, and marl. The Barbera The grapes are fermented at 28ºC in stainless steel tanks. The wine ages for 12 months in both wooden vats and small oak barrels. Subsequently, the wine ages for a further few months in the bottle.
