The Luigi Einaudi Barolo Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi 2015 displays the wild side of the Nebbiolo grape. Virile and powerful. The flavors are dark and mysterious. Dark cherries, dried flowers, lavender, asphalt, herbs, and scorched earth develop. This wine beautifully expresses the pronounced personality of Barolo wines. Medium to full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel followed by a build-up of soft tannins. For a Barolo, this wine has a smooth finish.
The 2015 vintage was a very good year in the Barolo region. The temperature was relatively high, allowing the wine to ripen quickly. Barolo 2015 is ‘already’ ready to drink from 2022-2024 and can be stored for a long time thereafter to mature further. Give Barolo some time, and it will reveal its full beauty. The Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi 2015 is an intriguing wine that has much to offer. However, it requires a serious dish to accompany it. Pasta with white truffle is of course a classic, but for example Brisket from wild boar is also an excellent choice.
The Luigi Einaudi Barolo Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi is made from a selection of the best Nebbiolo grapes (Michet clone) from the Costa Grimaldi vineyard, originally purchased by Luigi Einaudi in 1958. The vineyard has calcareous marl soil, good elevations, and a southeast exposure. The vineyard covers nearly 5 hectares (12.35 acres), but only about 3 are dedicated to this wine. It is situated in the hills between Barolo and the road leading to Novello and La Morra. After temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks and twenty to twenty-two days of maceration, the wine ages for thirty months in French oak barriques and Slavonian barrels, followed by twelve months in the bottle before release. Full-bodied with soft tannins and a spicy finish. Good aging potential, evolving beautifully over time.
Few wineries are as intertwined with the history of Italy as Poderi Einaudi, which was founded by the first president of the Italian Republic—one of the most respected in its history—to be democratically elected by his peers (in 1948). However, he had already started making wine in 1897, after purchasing his very first farm in San Giacomo, Dogliani. The properties have grown exponentially since then and include estates in the most sought-after areas of the region, covering a total area of 160 hectares (395 acres), with over 60 hectares (148 acres) of vines. The cellar itself has been completely renovated and expanded. Most of it is underground and temperature/humidity controlled, providing ideal conditions for the wines.
Today, Einaudi is owned and run by great-grandson Matteo Sardagna, who works with enologist Beppe Ca Viola, Zvonimir Jurkovic, cellar master and vineyard manager, and Roberto Mozzone, logistics manager.
Matteo and his team make elegant wines with a strong identity that honor their legacy and Matteo’s dedication to the land, the values and traditions of his family, and the Langhe region.
