In the middle of the Spanish plateau “Meseta de Ocana,” not far from Toledo, three friends founded their own winery in 1999. The revival of regional traditions became the basis of their way of working: organic cultivation of 35 hectares of indigenous grape varieties and the extreme continental climate. Together, they developed the first Spanish red wine, the Cuvée Rouge No. 2 – she regularly visited the Kolonne office for tastings to follow the development of the co-produced wine with us. Thus, an alcohol-free version was created from a high-class wine.

Column Zero: who are they?

How did you come up with the idea to develop alcohol-free wines? Entrepreneurs Philipp and Moritz enjoyed a glass now and then, but the artist and entrepreneur didn't like drinking alcohol all the time. There was a need for an alternative to alcoholic beverages and boring soft drinks or juices. The selection in supermarkets and online shops didn't convince them, so they took matters into their own hands. In 2018, they founded their start-up “Kolonne Null” in Berlin and have been working on first-class wines from all over Europe ever since. The alcohol is removed by vacuum distillation, preserving the flavor. Alcohol-free wine is anything but grape juice and is perfect for anyone who loves wine and sparkling wine but avoids alcohol. Collaboration with the winemakers is super important!

What makes Kolonne null so special is that we want to bring the characteristics of the growing region, the grapes, and the winemakers into the bottle, so that they can tell the story of each wine transparently. Closely connected to the highest standards of quality and perfection for the product and for ourselves. Where is the journey headed? The work begins now in the vineyard. Before the harvest, we discuss with the winemakers how we want to develop the specific wine. The ultimate added value works, as we believe, but only through our own production and the accompanying, representative, in-house headquarters with its own laboratory.
