Alto Adige Climate and landscape: the perfect balance

Alto Adige is located in the far north of Italy and is surrounded by the imposing Dolomites. This alpine landscape creates a unique climate in which warm summers and cool nights allow the grapes to ripen slowly. As a result, they develop intense aromas and refined acidity. Well-known wine regions within the area include Valle Isarco (here you will find the special white grape Kerner, which is somewhat similar to Riesling; a fine example is the Novacella Kerner), Bolzano, and Merano, where the combination of altitude and soil types contributes to the exceptional quality of the wines.

Viticulture: tradition and innovation

Winemaking in Alto Adige has a rich history and combines traditional methods with modern techniques. The region is particularly known for its high-quality white wines, such as Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer (which is often much drier than that from Alsace; take the Tramin Gewürztraminer as a fine example), and Sauvignon Blanc. In addition, beautiful red wines are also produced, such as Lagrein. Thanks to small-scale wine production and a focus on quality, Alto Adige is one of the most highly regarded wine regions in Italy. We feature, among others, Cantina Tramin, which is a well-known player in Alto Adige and is known for its high-quality wines in various price categories.

Grapes and special winemaking methods

The diversity of grape varieties in the region is impressive. The white wines stand out for their fresh and aromatic character, while the red wines distinguish themselves through their elegance and structure. Additionally, the region is experimenting with biodynamic viticulture and extended skin maceration for added complexity. This results in wines with a pronounced flavor profile and a long finish.
