Tramin Glarea Chardonnay: a reference to the terroir

Tramin Glarea Chardonnay refers to the terroir of the vineyards. Glarea comes from the Rhaeto-Romance language and literally means: heap of gravel. The terroir where the Chardonnay grapes grow consists of limestone and gravel. The gravel in this vineyard originates from the highest peaks of the Mendel Mountains. The vineyards are situated between 220 and 280 meters above sea level. This relatively low elevation of the vineyards, combined with the cold wind blowing down the mountains, creates a unique microclimate. The microclimate is characterized by large temperature fluctuations within 24 hours. During the day, the vineyard benefits from very high temperatures, while at night and in the early hours, the fresh wind causes the temperature to drop significantly.

Tasting note of the Glarea Chardonnay

In the glass, the Glarea is a clear straw-yellow color with a green hue. Ripe banana, apricots, and pineapple dominate on the nose. The Chardonnay tastes fresh and juicy and has a distinctive minerality. The Glarea is an all-rounder and pairs perfectly with savory starters, from vegetable minestrone to spaghetti vongole. This Chardonnay comes into its own perfectly with good fish or refined white meat. It is also a delicious combination with a pizza with buffalo mozzarella.

    Harvest and vinification

The Chardonnay grapes from Glarea are harvested by hand in small baskets and gently pressed immediately after the harvest. The wine ferments in oak barrels at a controlled temperature of 19°C, followed by partial malolactic fermentation. The wine then ages further in oak barriques.

Thanks to the beautiful acidity and quality of the wine, this Glarea has fantastic aging potential—of up to 7 to 10 years after the harvest! As time progresses, the wine will reveal more earthy notes and bring out the oak. For the optimal fruit sensation, it is best to drink the wine somewhat younger.
